The 2010 hurricane season is set to begin this week and it is important for Southwest Florida residents to pay attention and be prepared. With three years of relatively quiet storm seasons, it’s easy to become complacent. However, ignoring the possibility of a major storm coming our way can be a major mistake. All you have to do is remember two very important points:
- All it takes is one big storm to hit the area to cause major destruction.
- Not taking the necessary steps to be prepared hurts everyone in terms of the storms aftermath and rising insurance costs.
So, every Florida homeowner should prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Plan early and be prepared for any and all contingencies. Don’t let apathy make you an even worse victim of the power that Mother Nature can unleash.

Let’s hope mother nature gives Florida a break this year. Also, what’s going on with Florida and the BP oil spill? I would imagine the combination of oil + hurricanes is a bad one.
Considering everything that is going on with the oil spill, I’d say we’ve been darn lucky so far. I know it has caused major problems for many folks, but it could definitely be a lot worse IMO.
As for what happens if we get a hurricane, it seems the experts are mixed in their opinions as usual. Some say it could help and others say it would make things worse.
I guess all we can do is keep praying they can get the thing plugged sooner rather than later.
I agree with Bjamin in that everyone has been pretty lucky thus far. I think the most important thing is to make sure you’re up to date on both your flood and homeowner insurance.
