According to Money Magazine, Collier County in Southwest Florida ranks fourth on its list as one of the best places to live for having a long life. The magazine surveys various regions and identifies areas where residents have some of the longest life expectancies in the country.
Home to the City of Naples, Collier is the largest county (land wise) in the state. Fortunately for its residents, roughly 80% of it is devoted to nature preserves, state parks and recreation areas. In its survey results, Money stated “Collier County is the picture of Florida Leisure” and “almost any kind of water-related activity or exercise is readily available.”

With the Gulf of Mexico on its shores, the Everglades to the east and Ten Thousand Islands to the south, it’s easy to see how Money came to its conclusion. Throw in the sub tropical climate with its year round 70 plus degree temperatures and you can understand why this area is one of the most desirable places to live in all of Florida.
This year’s top ten “Best Places for a Long Life” included:
- Montgomery County in Maryland
- Story County in Iowa
- Carver County in Minnesota
- Collier County in Florida
- Benton County in Oregon
- Marin County in California
- Olmstead County in Minnesota
- Johnson County in Iowa
- Honolulu County in Hawaii
- Douglas County in Colorado
Residents in all of these counties enjoy some of the highest life expectancies in the country. To see the complete list of all 25 counties from Money’s survey visit 25 Best Places for a Long Life.

I’m not surprised…the mild weather encourages more outdoor activity, which encourages more physical activity, which keeps people healthier longer! Plus, I’m sure being near an ocean helps keep people happy. It’s no wonder so many people retire to Florida
I’m sure going to do my best to try and take advantage of the possibility.
There has to be something eerie about living in an area that is nothing but old folks and doctors. I want to live a long & happy life but I do want some young people around..viva austin, the university of texas and 5th street….
LOL, it’s not that bad Don. The median age is only 44.
We actually have a bunch of younger good ole boys and girls here. You just have to look a bit to find them.
The atmosphere surely has an impact but as said by Emily, I do agree that its only physical work which can make you healthy.
I was thinking about living on the Atlantic side within 50 miles of Fort Lauderdale when I retire, which could happen any month now. After reading bad news about the mismanaged counties on the Atlantic side of Southern Florida, I’ve given up on that idea. I’m now concentrating on cities in Collier and Lee counties. There’s something special about the Gulf side – nice people and plenty of things to do.
80% of the county devoted to National Parks. That’s a huge statistic. I visited recently and felt a keen sense of environmental awareness (mixed in with a bit of pride) from the people I met.
