The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched a new website this week dealing with imported Chinese drywall. The Environmental Protection Agency has determined that Chinese drywall may be a potential hazard. Approximately 36,000 homes in Florida and many others states including Alabama, California, Mississippi, Virginia and Louisiana have been affected by the imported drywall.
Consumers with homes known to contain the defective wallboard complain of foul odors, metal corrosion and health problems from occupying their properties. The CPSC website will provide details of the ongoing investigations into the problem including air sample reports, import tracking and analysis of the health effects of the use of Chinese drywall in homes.
The CPSC drywall website can be found by visiting www.cpsc.gov/info/drywall

Follow-up RSS Comments Feed or Leave a TrackbackI hate to generalize, but I will. The Chinese have no quality standards or ethics and will sell just about anything to anybody even if it is dangerous. U.S. businesses who buy the cheap goods need to take some responsibility and do product testing.
I agree Sam, just wish they would have considered doing such things sooner. The defective drywall situation here in Florida is really causing some major problems for all of us.
Wow! 36,000 homes in Florida alone? That is crazy!
Yea, it’s a real problem.
Worse though is the stigma that attaches to a community as a whole, even though only a few of the properties may actually have been found to have the defective drywall.
Folks just don’t want to take any chances or be associated with those two terrible words – Chinese Drywall
It is a shame that more was not done to prevent this from happening. The drywall will have to be replaced in many cases resulting in a very large expense and inconvenience for the homeowner.

I have lived in SW Florida for the 5 years now and am looking to move to Iowa City for work. Do you know any good Realtors in Iowa City?
Thank you for your time!

Thought I post a comment about a just released update:
State and federal officials say homeowners shouldn’t worry about radioactivity from Chinese drywall.
According to a report released last Friday, traces of phosphogypsum, or calcium sulfate, were found in chinese drywall samples but the radioactive levels were no higher than what ordinarily would be found in the natural environment.
Regulators say Chinese drywall is not radioactive, but may still be dangerous.
Talking about Chinese products I can say that it is true sometimes, that products they are produced are not safe and good quality. Using this is dangerous and might put people lives using that products at risk.
I agree with the previous comments regarding standards of things imported from overseas. I feel bad for the thousands of homeowners here in southwest Florida who are battling the red tape because their home was made with Chinese drywall.
