Estero is Spanish for "estuary", meaning where the river joins the sea. Founded in 1882 by citrus farmers, Estero is an ideally located unincorporated area in south Lee County bordered by Ft. Myers to the north and Bonita Springs to the south. The Estero River has long been acknowledged as the lifeblood of the community since Ponce de Leon discovered it in 1513 while exploring the Gulf of Mexico. Mound Key, where de Leon landed, is located at the mouth of the river where the Calusa Indians made their capital and where the first Jesuit Mission appeared in North America. The Estero River is surrounded by stands of ancient oaks and is a protected and treasured aquatic preserve.

Several years later, in 1884, a Chicago Utopian society made their commune at the corner of 41 and Corkscrew Road and formed what is now known as Korehsan State Historic Site and Park. Until just the past few years, Estero was a quiet and sleepy river town of predominantly single family residential properties. However today, with the explosion of growth in its nearest neighbor - the city of Bonita Springs – Estero is rapidly changing its appearance. Over 10,000,000 square feet of commercial space and 11,000 housing units are now being developed and Estero is experiencing a sea change to its quiet beginnings.

Development in Estero is controlled by Lee County with special amendments for area.
