On the western side of Estero Island you'll find the Gulf of Mexico with warm waters and those endless expanses of wide beach, but just walk across the street and the flavor will change to the mangrove side of the island fronting on Estero Bay, the largest protected waterway in the United States. Every imaginable water sport is available up and down The Beach on Estero Island – you can rent a jet ski to jump waves or take it into the backwaters for viewing both manatees and dolphins, mangrove islands that are home to roseate spoonbills, egrets, and pelicans and absolutely not a soul around. Parasailing is another popular choice on Ft. Myers Beach – just imagine the view you have from 150 feet above the blue waters, soft breezes, and gorgeous Estero Bay cays. At the Beach there are events every month but one of the largest annual parades and festivals celebrates the "pink and gold" industry – the Shrimp Festival in March. Each year there are also offshore power boat races and sand sculpting contests that are exciting and fun to watch.
