Ft. Myers Real Estate

Fort Myers sits along the natural splendor and shoreline of the Caloosahatchee River and is nestled around the historic city center. Named in honor of Colonel Abraham Myers, the Fort was one of the earliest bases of operation during the Seminole Indian Wars in the early 1800s. Also, during its early history, Ft. Myers was known as a cattle town with pineapple plantations dotting its surrounds and it's thought that the term "cracker" comes from tough pioneers and cattle drivers "cracking" their whips as they drove their stock down McGregor Boulevard to the shipyards at Punta Rassa.
Southwest Florida Living

It was the opening of the Tamiami Trail (US 41 connecting Tampa to Miami) in the 1920s that initially spurred the city's growth and World War II that put the city on the map. The federal government wanted to train pilots in the best weather possible and Ft. Myers had two airfields already present – Buckingham and Page Fields. These pilots, and their families, returned after the war to make Ft. Myers their home and began the true beginnings of the growth we see today.
Today Ft. Myers is a metropolis bustling with historical, cultural, and ecological attractions – plus it's home to a vital and dynamic nightlife as the city is where the action is! This is where the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins Spring Training Camps are located, the Imaginarium Hands-On Museum with their interactive robots for kids, the Ft. Myers Historical Museum, Harborside Events Center in old Ft. Myers, cruises from the Yacht Basin, and the Southwest Florida Enterprise Center which is actively engaged in revitalizing the downtown area of Ft. Myers. Along the riverfront new high rise condominiums are being built, streets are being redone, cozy cafes are opening, and the residents enjoy the fabulous weather while going about their active work days.
Now a blend of young and old, Ft. Myers is known for its fabulous winter weather. Its most famous resident ever, Thomas Edison, spent his winters here seeking an alterative to rubber for Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. His deep respect for nature prompted him to import the Royal Palms still lining both sides of McGregor Boulevard and these trees are how the city earned its nickname – City of Palms. Ft. Myers pays tribute to his birthday each year in February with the Edison Festival of Lights, a two week celebration culminating in the Grand Parade of Light drawing thousands of visitors each year to his Edison-Ford Estate.
Ft. Myer's Recreation Dept. offers both recreational and leisure activities for families and seniors throughout the area. Besides all the sport for kids like swimming, tennis, baseball and softball leagues, soccer, dance, and arts and crafts, there is an active after school program with both summer and holiday camps for kids. Numerous community centers offer activities of all types.
In Ft. Myers, the real estate market includes a vast selection. You may chose a “cracker” cottage in the original section of town, an Art Deco mansion down on the riverfront, a gated boating community, numerous newly built subdivisions, and every type of condominium living imaginable. Ft. Myers is very affordable, the schools are excellent, their business climate is receptive, and the weather is unbeatable!
