Port Charlotte Real Estate

Port Charlotte Real Estate for Sale

Port Charlotte located on the Peace River is an old and historic town named for Queen Charlotte Sophia, the wife of King George the III. Originally explored in the 1500s by Ponce de Leon it wasn't until 1775 that it got its name. Hurricane Charley in 2004 did a bit of re-arranging of the landscape and now Port Charlotte is going through a transition from the old to new with road and bridge expansions, taking advantage of the hurricane's damage to update its appearance. Port Charlotte is a growing employment center and one of the more bustling cities on the Southwest Gulf Coast that is still affordable.

Encompassing the Cape Haze Peninsula, Harbor Heights, and Deep Creek, the Port Charlotte area offers large home sites and river access in a serene setting. Along the northern side of Charlotte Harbor – especially in Deep Creek and Harbor Heights buyers are purchasing tear downs of 40 year old homes and re-building million dollar estates featuring Gulf access and entry to the "back waters" of the Peace River. Cape Haze is where you will find Boca Grande, a barrier island off the harbor mouth that is a favorite Presidential retreat and famous for its tarpon fishing.

Port Charlotte Named Best Place to Retire in the U.S.

Traveling a little north of Port Charlotte, you'll find Gulf Cove, Englewood and Venice which are considered the "bedroom" communities of Cape Haze Peninsula and Lemon Bay. These properties will enjoy Gulf access either through the Intercoastal Waterway or the Myakka River. Little known to outsiders is the reclusive enclave of Palm Island. Accessible only by ferry, Palm Island is a resort and private residence community of Key West style homes featuring both Gulf and Lemon Bay access to these internationally known fishing waters. And just off the coast a little south of Port Charlotte is the State Park of Cayo Costa – again, accessible only by boat - Cayo Costa is pristine white sand, blue warm waters, and a place to commune with the serenity of nature and wondrous natural beauty.

Contributing to Charlotte Harbor – one of the larger bays on the Southwest Gulf Coast – are the Myakka and Peace Rivers. Divers explore the Peace looking for shark’s teeth and canoe and kayakers seek the Myakka for its remoteness, waterways and wildlife. Nature is diverse and widespread in these areas near Port Charlotte – it's peaceful and there is very little commercial development such as high rises or large planned communities. Port Charlotte's real estate market is rapidly expanding with new construction and renovation since there is still land to be developed for housing and waterfront lots are affordable. Spreading out from Murdock, which is home to the Town Center and the main shopping area, you can find all types of housing depending on your desires and pocketbook.
